Dr. Jeff Rutgard, a Foundation Board member, in 2009 visited Christmas Island, Republic of Kiribati, in association with Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. and Surgical Eye Expeditions, International. Over the course of two weeks, approximately 400 patients were seen, and 100 successful eye surgeries were performed, primarily for cataracts and pterygium.
Christmas Island (Kiritimati) and its two outer islands of Fanning (Tabuaeran) and Washington (Teraina), in the Central Pacific, are among the most isolated and medically needy populations on earth.
